Every UK employer must assess the risks to employees and anyone affected by their work, and employers with five or more staff must record the significant findings. The legal test is that the assessment is suitable and sufficient, which means proportionate to the risk, specific to your workplace, and actually acted upon. Generic templates downloaded and left unchanged routinely fail that test. Our consultants write assessments around what your people really do.

The assessments most employers need

A general workplace assessment is the starting point, but specific hazards need their own assessment: substances, manual handling, screens, fire, work equipment, and increasingly work-related stress under the HSE Management Standards.

Certain groups also need individual assessments by law, including new and expectant mothers, young workers, and lone workers.

  • General workplace and activity risk assessments
  • Fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
  • COSHH assessments for substances hazardous to health
  • Manual handling and repetitive task assessments
  • DSE and workstation assessments, including homeworkers
  • Work-related stress assessment using the HSE Management Standards
  • New and expectant mother, young worker and lone worker assessments

What makes an assessment suitable and sufficient

It identifies the significant hazards rather than every conceivable one, records who might be harmed and how, evaluates existing controls honestly, and sets out further action with a named owner and a date. It reflects the way work is really done, not the way the procedure says it should be.

It also has a review date and evidence that the review happened. Assessments should be revisited annually, and immediately after an incident, a change in process, new equipment or a change in the people doing the work.

Templates versus written assessments

A template is a useful structure and a poor assessment. Searching for a risk assessment template is the right instinct, but the document only becomes compliant once someone competent has walked the job, talked to the people doing it and written down what is actually controlled.

We give clients our templates to use for routine, low-risk tasks and reassessments, and write the significant ones ourselves. That combination is usually the most cost-effective approach.

Why UK employers choose our risk assessment services

What businesses tell us makes the difference when they switch their risk assessment services to EmployerHQ.

Written around your actual work

Consultants observe the task and speak to the people doing it, so controls reflect practice rather than a generic hazard list.

Every hazard type covered

General, fire, COSHH, manual handling, DSE and stress assessments from one provider, in one consistent format.

Actionable, not academic

Each further action has an owner, a deadline and a plain-English description of what good looks like.

Templates for your team

You keep our templates and guidance so routine reassessments can be done in-house between visits.
